Moving Tips

For years United Van Lines (Canada) has been the mover of choice for corporate Canada, moving employees across the country and around the world.

  • A long-distance move in a moving van presents difficulties for plants, such as heat, cold and dryness. If possible, it is best to move your plants in a car as you can regulate the temperature. Being packed in a dark box may shock your plants, a week or two before the move pull a sheer curtain over the window to reduce the light. Airlines accept plants as airfreight but they do not provide any service other than the transportation itself.
  • Teens, having developed more interests and special friendships may be the most upset about the move. Plan to spend a lot of time with them. Make sure that they understand the reasons for the move and include them in decision-making. Let them share in the process by giving them specific and important responsibilities during the move
  • It is best to let young children know about the move shortly before it takes place. Moving is a busy time, try to spend extra time with them. Make the process an adventure with related games and stories. Let them pack their favorite toys.
  • In this busy time of new beginnings and major changes take some time out for yourself and your family:
    • Plan a good-bye party for your children and their friends
    • Make time to visit family and neighbors
    • Learn about your new community well in advance of the move
    • If you are traveling by car to your new home, make time for sightseeing
  • We strongly recommend that you have delicate and valuable items professionally packed:
    • Blankets, pillows, linens and towels: Pack in clean cartons or use a cushioning material. Wrap good linens in tissue paper or leave in drawers.
    • Clothing: Fasten zippers and buttons to secure clothes on their hangers and place in wardrobe cartons. Do not overload or pack anything else into the wardrobe. If you do not have wardrobe cartons, remove hangers, fold items and place in lined cartons. Use tissue paper between folds to prevent wrinkling. Lightweight items such as lingerie may be left in dresser drawers.
    • Moving fish: If you are moving fish in your car, place the fish in an unbreakable container such as a bucket or a leak proof double plastic bag, secured closed with a rubber band. Place in a Styrofoam cooler, this will stabilize the water temperature for 24 hours. Pack the aquarium and accessories in a separate container.
