What to Put in Your Personal Moving Day Kit

In all the commotion of packing and moving, it’s easy to forget that there are certain things you’ll need on the day of the move. To make sure you have everything, it helps to create a personal kit for moving day.

Most of these items will fit in a suitcase or in a few labelled boxes you set aside. You can keep these things with you in your car, or in case of the boxes, ask your movers to load them last so they’re the first things out of the truck.

Tips to Protect Your Goods during a Residential Move

McMinniman’s Moving & Storage takes pride in being a family-owned and operated company serving Western New Brunswick since 1929. As such, we understand that moving can be a stressful time in anyone’s life so we offer these tips to protect your goods during a residential move.

Get the right boxes - Consider the size of the boxes. Small, fragile items crammed into a big box could break under the weight of bigger belongings. If you have both large and small items, you will need boxes of various sizes. Use the original manufacturer’s box where possible, and keep in mind that boxes you have had around for a while or boxes from liquor or grocery stores - particularly if they have been wet - might not hold up during a move.

Provide padding - With breakable items, padding is necessary, especially true if a box is not entirely full, as items can shift and break. Bubble wrap and foam peanuts are among your options. Tissue paper or plain newsprint are great for wrapping bowls, plates, mugs and other dishes. For saving time and money, use towels, pillows, blankets, comforters, T-shirts or even stuffed animals to offer some cushion for packed belongings.

Ensure coverage - If you have a homeowner’s or renter’s policy, your possessions might be covered during a move - and even then, only some of them. Check with your insurer to find out what your policy says. Remember, before a mover loads a single box into a truck; be sure you understand exactly what is covered and what is not. In addition, you should not sign a delivery receipt for your household goods if you spot language about releasing the company or its partners from any liability.

Keep valuables - Take cash, credit cards, coin collections, jewelry, irreplaceable photographs and critical documents like birth certificates and passports with you.

Protect Floors - Doormats will encourage family, friends, and movers walking through grass or a dirt driveway from tracking it into your home. Use, rugs and runners to create a “walkway” starting from the door and traveling through the house, making sure that there is a route to every room and that it is free of bumps and trip hazards.
